Teacher facing ‘corrective action’ for class comment

This from the Messenger by way of KSBA:

Madisonville-North Hopkins High School teacher Richard Sarles faces “corrective action” for a comment he made in class.

“He made what we would consider an inappropriate comment,” Hopkins County Schools Deputy Superintendent Linda Zellich said.

“He admitted it, and he apologized to the students.”

Latassa Mitchell-Hawkins, the mother of one of the students involved, doesn’t believe the school district is taking the matter seriously enough.

On Oct. 29, her daughter and three other black students were talking together in Sarles’ class.

“He pointed fingers to them and said if the class doesn’t quiet down, he’s going to have to separate his children of color,” Mitchell-Hawkins said...

It is so hard to believe that there are still teachers that make comments that are racial in nature. The diversity that is present in our world is what makes life beautiful and I find it so sad that there are still people that will make comments like this one.

I cannot believe a teacher would say something like this in 2010. It really is a shame.

It is a real disappointment to see that racial discrimination is still in the schools. Many people know that it is still there, but it is sad to see it brought to attention by an authority figure such as a teacher. Teachers are supposed to be setting examples for their students and encouraging racial discrimination, even in a joking manner, is completely unprofessional. To see a teacher saying such inappropriate things only gives the students a reason to act out inappropriately themselves. I agree that the teacher should face corrective action to show that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.

What year is it? 1959? Everyone this day and age should be educated about the evils of racism. How judging a man based on his skin color is not only cruel but ignorant as well. Now, after saying that, the last person I would imagine using a racial slur is a school teacher. Your job as a teacher is to teach the youth about the evils of racism and teach them how to accept everyone no matter if they are black, white, Puerto Rican, Chinese, ect. This might not have been a big deal in the 70’s, 80’s or even 90’s. This is a new day and age however, and as a teacher you have to be careful what you say. This teacher should have known better and should never teach again.

It’s shocking that a teacher today would make such racial comments to their students. Today in our schools we are teaching students how difficult and cruel it was when whites discriminated against African Americans. This was a time that we do not appreciate or accept. As teachers, we are suppose to be educating our students, being role models, and showing them how one should act. This will demonstrate to the students on how one should behave. We cannot allow this to happen in our schools. I agree that Richard Sarles should face corrective action for his inappropriate comment. This will show to everyone that this kind of inappropriate behavior should not be allowed.

I can't believe that a teacher in a modern day public school would say this! As teachers we are supposed to reinforce instead of being a harbor of negativity! I think that what this teacher did is very wrong and he should look back on the code of ethics that he swore he would uphold and ask himself if he did what he should. In my opinion he should be put on probation and watched very carefully over the course of a period of time. He should also make a public apology for his actions and have a personal meeting with his class. Sometimes we say things that aren’t in our best interest to say, however as teachers we must enforce a very efficient “filter” to the things we say and do. It is our job to educate every student no matter the race or any other difference that they may have.
