After Erwin: A step backward may be best

This from the Central Kentucky News-Journal:

A missing personnel file, awards not won, presentations not made, problems not solved, lawsuits not filed ... whew ... and now an education commissioner who's not.All in all, it sounds like our state will actually be better off that Barbara Erwin decided to move to Arizona instead of Kentucky.

For those who have followed the story since Kentucky named its new Commissioner of Education, what a convoluted route it's been. For those who haven't, you've missed a wild ride.

First, Erwin had several "mistakes" on the resume ... that I teach my children are lies.

...After her assuring us that she had never been involved in litigation, we find out she has been sued by an Arizona board member.

She has also apparently claimed credit for solving problems that others had already solved.

It has also been reported that she issued a memo in February stating that she should be awarded 85 additional sick days the past three years. Who earns 85 sick days in a decade, let alone a year? However, even after all the "mistakes" and unanswered questions, Erwin still beat out the other applicants for Kentucky's top school spot.

Then, three days before she was to start work, Erwin changes her mind, citing "overwhelming and acute scrutiny" and "continued noise by the media."My only response to that is ... what did she expect?

... Our tax dollars are what's paying them. And when it comes to our children - our future, we can't take any chances.

The state Board of Education has acknowledged that perhaps it relied too much on the search company for its information. But it's still a shame that we don't always get what we pay for.

And the $50,000 we paid for the search was about $49,999.99 too much.
