Jefferson County school achievement plan OK'd

Jefferson County school officials unveiled details last night on how they plan to tackle poor student achievement at the district's four struggling schools, as well as methods planned for other schools to boost student performance.

The 2007-08 Districtwide Improvement Plan was unanimously approved by the Jefferson County Board of Education at its meeting.

..."Our goal is to raise achievement at all of our schools," said Ken Draut, director of planning for Jefferson County Public Schools, who helped present the plan to board members.

..."This fall, there will be a universal math curriculum for sixth- and seventh-graders and there is going to be a math-intervention program for kids in grades K-8 who are having trouble," he said.

Next year, the district hopes to have a universal math curriculum in place for students in grades K-5 and eighth grade.

...The plans for two of those schools -- Iroquois and Southern, which have been in the lowest achievement level for four years -- were announced earlier this year. The district will restructure both schools, making them single-sex beginning with the 2008-09 school year.

Beginning this fall, the schools will get updated computers and libraries, enhanced foreign-language, music and arts offerings, and class size will decrease to 20 from 28.
