Stumbo: Beshear’s budget plan spares education, Medicaid

Cuts most other agencies 2.6%

FRANKFORT — Gov. Steve Beshear’s plan to deal with a projected $996 million budget shortfall will not call for cutting higher education, the main funding formula for K-12 education and Medicaid, according to House Speaker Greg Stumbo.

Most other state agencies would face a 2.6 percent reduction, he said.

Beshear outlined his plan to address the budget shortfall for fiscal year 2010, which begins July 1, in a private meeting Wednesday with legislative leaders. He has scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m. Wednesday to unveil the plan he will ask lawmakers to consider in a special legislative session to begin June 15...
