Parent Strike Against Principal Yields Dismissal


Parents call Fremont principal a "bully"
Mission San Jose Elementary administrator sets meeting

FREMONT — Students are returning to Mission San Jose Elementary School today, following a two-day "strike" called by their parents against Principal Mildred Byrd.

It's unclear how many families participated in the strike. The school reported a total of 71 absences the last two days, though students may have been out for any number of reasons.
Critics of the principal said about 50 families have issues with her. On Wednesday, about six parents passed out fliers before school, urging others to join their group.

The protesting parents said she doesn't respect students or adults, speaks with an intimidating tone, behaves like a bully and creates a hostile environment. Meetings with the principal to address such concerns have been to no avail, some parents said.

"The kids never get to explain themselves," parent Shaital Desai said. "She stands tall over them. ... Every kid who comes to her office comes out crying...
