Louisville School Board will Consider Single-sex Institutions

This from Toni Konz at the Courier-Journal:

Under proposal, 2 middle schools would reorganize

Jefferson County's first all-boy and all-girl public schools in decades would open their doors this fall -- and any middle-schooler in the district would be eligible to attend, under a new proposal before the school board tonight.

When the 2008-09 school year begins, Southern Leadership Academy and Iroquois Middle School will essentially become one school -- with two single-sex campuses: boys will attend Southern and girls will go to Iroquois.

Superintendent Sheldon Berman is asking the Jefferson County school board to designate both schools as magnet programs, meaning they will be open to students from across the district.
"We decided that as we move forward with this concept and make a commitment to it, we should open it up to parents from all over the county," Berman said.
