The Importance of Transitioning to Kindergarten

While summer may be a time to enjoy some relaxation and change of routine, it is also often a time of transition. For young children and their parents, caregivers and teachers, transitions are sometimes stressful and confusing. Children may need to adjust to a summer program or new child care situation, or get ready to move into a new school or to start kindergarten.

Seasoned early childhood professionals know that when children learn how to prepare themselves for transitions – like how to say good-bye to a caregiver in the morning as well as how to move from choice time to circle time – they are learning more than time-management skills. They are learning how to manage their emotions, set priorities and anticipate what will happen next. These are the same skills that will help children prepare for all kinds of transitions, including the big step of transitioning to kindergarten.
