A Lexington lawmaker has proposed an amendment that would significantly strengthen legislation to help protect high school athletes from heatstroke.
The proposal by Republican Sen. Alice Forgy Kerr of Lexington would mandate the presence of at least one person who has completed a sports safety course at every high school athletic practice and competition beginning in the 2009-2010 school year.
The amendment directs the Kentucky Board of Education to require high school coaches to complete such a safety course and to pass an examination beginning next fall. The board would determine the content of the course...
...Senate President Pro Tem Katie Stine, R-Ft. Thomas, said on Wednesday that she expects the bill, along with Kerr's proposed amendment, to be called for a vote in the Senate this week...
...However, the Senate Education Committee voted on Monday to alter the bill so that it only requires a study of the issue. Kerr's amendment would effectively reverse that decision.
