FRANKFORT, Ky. — The former chairman of the Kentucky Board of Education has submitted a letter of resignation to Gov. Steve Beshear.
Keith Travis, who has served on the board for 10 years, recently sent the letter to Beshear. ...In his letter, Travis said he is resigning because of personal employment obligations
...Travis could not immediately be reached for comment, but has said in previous interviews that he felt he has taken most of the blame from fellow board members for last year’s controversial and short-term hiring of Barbara Erwin as state education commissioner.
Last May, the board voted 10-0 to name Illinois educator Erwin as the state’s next commissioner. But in July, after a series of revelations about her background, Erwin resigned three days before she was to begin the job.
A month later, the board voted not to reappoint Travis as chairman. Several board members acknowledged that the Erwin search and hiring played a role in the board’s decision to replace Travis.
...With Travis’ resignation, Beshear will soon have to replace or reappoint five state board of education members. The terms of four other members — Janna Vice, David Rhodes, David Webb and Bonnie Lash Freeman — will expire on April 14.
KyPolitics, a partisan blog written by Republican strategist Brett Hall , a former Fletcher adviser, recently claimed that
Beshear has failed to make timely appointments to the four positions on the board that have terms expiring in 2008, and now lacks the ability to have any late appointments confirmed in the General Assembly that is now in regular session.
KSN&C contacted the governor's media office and was informed by Dick Brown that according to the governors general counsel, "They're wrong."
KyPolitics responded, "They're wrong."
Brown said, "...we'll probably see those, easily by early summer, if not before hand."
To which they responded Yah huh.
