National Teacher Salaries, 10-year Trend

The National Education Association reported recently that over the past 10 years, teachers' salaries have increased 1.3 percent in constant dollars and the average percentage change in teachers’ salaries from the 2004-05 to the 2005-06 fiscal year was 2.9 percent. This according to “Rankings and Estimates.”

Sadly, the 10-year increase for Kentucky was 0.1% in constant dollars.

It's even grimmer if you know that the required 2006-07 raise was 2%, and districts were hammered so badly by benefits costs that very few had the option of going above. That means we'll likely show an after inflation decline in average teacher salary for that year.

For 2007-08, the legislature required $3,000 raises. If inflation had stayed under control, that would have given teachers back their 1994-95 buying power. But as we know, inflation is not under control. Last month, it hit 4.3% for the most recent 12-months. At a guess, when those numbers are settled, we'll find that teachers made a gain from 2006-07 to 2007-08, but they'll STILL be behind their average salaries from 1994-95.

Grim, and getting grimmer.
