Ellis on the History of Education in Kentucky

Dr. Bill Ellis, the author of A History of Education in Kentucky (2011), will present “Whither Education in Kentucky: The Challenges and Promises of the 21st Century” on Thursday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. in O’Donnell Hall of the Student Success Building.

His presentation is part of Eastern Kentucky University’s year-long Chautauqua Lecture Series on “Living with Others: Challenges and Promises.”  Dr. Charles Elliott, Foundation Professor of Biological Sciences, will introduce Ellis.

Ellis is Foundation Professor Emeritus of History at EKU.  The author of six books and over thirty journal articles, he received a Fulbright grant to Massey University in New Zealand in 1989 and won the 1999 Governor’s Award for his book Robert Worth Bingham and the Southern Mystique (1997).  In addition to writing a column for The Kentucky Monthly Magazine, he is currently working on a history of humor with an emphasis on Kentucky as a crossroads of archetypal American humor.

Ellis’s schedule at EKU on Thursday, February 23 includes:
v  Dinner: 6:00-7:15 pm, Faculty Dining Room, Powell Building.
v  Lecture and Q&A: 7:30-9:00 pm, O’Donnell Hall, Student Success Building.
v  Book Signing: 9:00-9:30 pm, O’Donnell Hall, Student Success Building.

Free and open to the public, all of the above events are sponsored by the Department of History and the Society of Foundation Professors.

Classes are welcome and proof-of-attendance slips will be available to students in attendance. In EKU's EDF 203, it's worth one bonus point.

Will Dr. Stu silberman be speaking tonight? In a way, he wrote the book on education in Kentucky. As readers will recall from his tenure in the Fayette County Public Schools, Dr. Silberman was the first to inauguarate "child centered" school reform in the Commonwealth.
