The idea that she's ready to deal with international relations - not to mention the rest of the massive responsibilities of one a heart-beat away from the presidency - is a joke. But folks in alaska seem to think she was a pretty good education governor.
This from Ed Week, Photo by Kiichiro Sato/AP:
In tapping Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, presumed Republican presidential nominee John McCain has selected an elected official who has supported increased funding for education across her rural, frontier state and voiced support for school-choice programs that appeal to many conservatives.
A mother of five children, Ms. Palin, 44, vaults onto the national stage as the vice presidential nominee from relative obscurity, at least within the political and education circles of the nation’s capital.
The Republican governor was elected to that post less than two years ago. Before that, she was the mayor of Wasilla, a suburb of Anchorage, which is the state’s largest city...

Even more Hillary supporters will go for McCain now. Obama is no longer a near certainty. Heaven forbid something happens to McCain, but I believe Palin would rise to the occasion. She has the right attitude. Everyone knows Obama is NOT ready for POTUS, Palin is only for the VP. Look at Dan Quayle.
YEY SARAH PALIN! YEY John McCain! Great pick! The 1st woman for the GOP VP? SCORE!
She's conservative! SCORE! She's a Governor! SCORE! She's pro-drilling! She's a hunter! SCORE! She played hockey in school! SCORE! She's pro-life! And she respects women! SCORE! What has Obama been running during this time?
Palin scores for partisan politics, I can see that.
It's disappointing to me because the choice underscores how fully McCain has turn away from the independent principles of accountability and moderation he built his reputation on - principles I admire.
That, at his age and with a history of cancer, he would risk our nation's future for votes puts him firmly in the neo-con camp (where it's not really about the issues - but all about the power) and reinforces Democratic claims that his would become a third Bush term - something I don't wish to see.
For a moderate guy who favored Biden but liked McCain in the beginniing...McCain is lost to me. The more he snuggles up to the right, the more I'm reminded of the long list of bad acts wrought by the Bush Administration.
In the end, I think this ploy will cost him. But what did he have to loose? He was running eight points down following the most unpopular president ever. Now he's looking more and more like Bush every day.
My sincere hope is that, if McCain is elected, he will use this recent philosophical relativism once again, turn away from the right-wingers, and get back to the center where he naturally belongs.
I think neo-cons are correct to be concerned that he might abandon them after the election.
