Embattled Fayette County Schools superintendent resigns
Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton announced on
Thursday that he will be leaving the Fayette County Public Schools to
become the next Executive Director of the Kentucky Association of School
Superintendents.
Dr. Shelton's resignation is effective December 31.

Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton, who has led
the school district since 2011, announced Thursday that he will be
leaving the Fayette County Public Schools to become Executive Director
of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.
"Although I did not enter into this decision lightly, I am very
excited by the opportunity to work with other superintendents and impact
educational improvement on a broader scale," Shelton said. "In order
for Kentucky to continue its progress in education, we must advocate at
the state level for better funding of our classrooms throughout
Kentucky."

Shelton said he would become the next Executive Director of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.
He said he would leave his position in Lexington at the end of the year.
Shelton

Shelton was named superintendent in Fayette County in 2011.

district said that under Kentucky statute, a superintendent screening
committee would be named to help the school board choose Shelton's
replacement.
