Berman Headed to Eugene

Where Charter Schools Await

This from Toni at C-J:

JCPS Superintendent Sheldon Berman
hired to lead Eugene, Oregon schools

Outgoing Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Sheldon Berman has been named the new school chief in Eugene, Ore. The Eugene School Board voted 7-0 Wednesday night to hire Berman, one of three finalists, as their next superintendent.

“Dr. Berman is a visionary educational leader and has engaged both staff and community members in moving schools forward through difficult conditions,” Eugene school board chairman Craig Smith said in a prepared statement. “We believe he is an excellent fit for Eugene.”

The district, the fourth largest in Oregon, has about 16,500 students in 38 schools, including three public charter schools, and an annual budget of $140 million. By comparison, JCPS has approximately 100,000 students in 155 schools and an operating budget of about $1 billion...

Would we have expected anything less?

A superintendent who "fails" is either named to head a prestigous foundation thinktank or hailed as a "visionary" by the new school district who hires him/ her.

Much the same with Dr. Peter Flynn (earned doctorate) who failed to tell the Fayette County Board of Education a principal was found with a concealed weapon in her car. He was, when we last checked, alive and well, and making a wonderful salary, in Freeport Illinois.

One person's trash is another man's treasure.

A really big 'hoot' in all of this is that Ray & Associates, of Barbara Erwin infamy, helped Eugene find Berman. Check it out:

Reminds one of musical chairs-or perhaps the deck chairs on the Titantic-Makes one wonder about the role of the "Head Hunter" firms in this process.

Apparently failure is a criteria for appointment to the next position

Clearly there is a shortage of superintendents...I wonder who writes recommendations for these men.

Anonymous at 9:04pm: These men write their own recommendations. Sheldon Berman has a whole portfolio of fiction he has written that has appeared in various publications over the years. Here is the latest: http://www.jefferson.k12.ky.us/News/Archive/spotlight/HSTW.pdf
