House moves to lower interest on student loans

WASHINGTON // Legislation to lower interest rates on student loans and increase aid to poor people who want to go to college won House approval [Wednesday].

To pay for the proposal, lawmakers would cut about $19 billion in federal subsidies to banks that issue government-backed student loans.

Budget rules require nearly $1 billion of that savings to go toward reducing the federal deficit, but the rest would go to student benefits.

Arizona grad-student debt reaches record high; up $7,000 over last decade

The average debt for graduate students at Arizona's universities has reached an all-time high.
Last year, nearly half the students who earned graduate degrees owed money on student loans, with the average student carrying almost $34,000 in debt.

That is $7,000 more than a decade ago, when a third of students took out loans, according to an analysis of Arizona Board of Regents records by The Arizona Republic.
