California is on the verge of being the first state to require that gay, lesbian and transgendered contributions to society be taught in schools. Of course there are some people who do not agree with this, and on Thursday night's "Colbert Report" Stephen Colbert made light of those naysayers in pitch perfect parody.

Pointing out that highlighting LGBT accomplishments teaches children the "dangerous lesson that gay people exist," Colbert's fake outrage mimics what some pundits are actually saying. One Fox News commentator suggested that someday kids will be saying that "George Washington was a homosexual."

"How dare California say that a man wearing a powdered wig and silk stockings is gay," Colbert said. "Next thing you know they'll have him crossing the Delaware on a Pride float."

Watch the clip below to hear Colbert offer his own very condensed version of gay history. According to him it started in ancient Greece and didn't emerge again until the the 1970s when Paul Lynde was given the center square.

Edu Sec Spellings to Consider Federally Mandated Spanking

There are only about 1,500 US schools out of 100,000 that are in a chronic state of underperformance. But what should be done?

Colbert gets Spellings to think about a good old fashioned spanking - but questions the effectiveness of sanctions under NCLB.

"Hasn't the Bush administration shown us that sanctions don't work. It's much better just to bomb these schools and then occupy them."

Of course, I'll be asleep by 10... but you can watch the trains wreck tonight on Colbert at 11:30 pm, on Comedy Central.

You may recall US Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings appeared on Comedy Central's Daily Show with John Stewart back in May 2007. She was the first Bush administration official to do so.

Unfortunately, Stewart lobbed softballs and appeared to want to avoid anything controversial.

He gave Spellings an apple, got out his #2 pencils and a Lunchable. Nothing about the Reading First scandal...scant little on the student loan scandal.

So the bar is set low. Let's hope Colbert clears it by a mile.

Should an undergraduate studying business pay more than one studying psychology? Should a journalism degree cost more than one in literature? More and more public universities, confronting rising costs and lagging state support, have decided the answers may be yes and yes.

Now comes the definitive answer - courtesy of Stephen Colbert.

Well, the news finally broke in the main stream media this week. States are lowering standards to avoid sanctions under NCLB. I wrote about it in January after David Hamilton (History Prof @ UK) tipped me off that Paul Tough (editor of New York Magazine) wrote about it in November. That doesn't exactly make me smart, does it?

That's doubly true since the definitive story has now been told by no less than Stephen Colbert in this (2:51) segment from the Colbert Report, titled "EASY A."
