Miami TV reporter charged with trespassing at school with loaded handgun

A Miami TV reporter was charged with trespassing on school property while carrying a loaded handgun. The irony: Jeff Weinsier of WPLG-TV was doing a story about school violence.

''Miami-Dade Schools Police is a very effective force and they take any incident of anyone bringing a weapon to campus seriously,'' Miami-Dade schools spokesman John Schuster tells The Miami Herald.

Was Weinsier trespassing or was he on public property? Judge for yourself. Here's a report with footage that shows the altercation that preceded the arrest. It shows him arguing with police about his right to stand on a sidewalk outside Central High School. At one point, a burly cop is shown manhandling the cameraman. Moments later, Wiensier is handcuffed and led away from the school's perimeter.

"I've been advised not to say anything," Wiensier tells his own station, according to the Associated Press. "The videotape speaks for itself. ... I was not trespassing."

Wiensier has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, the station says. We tried to reach the police department, but no one answered the phone when we called the non-emergency number.
